Running Strong

My friend "Doc" has shared an incredible story. It is in the comment section in response to yesterday's entry titled "Fitting In." Doc captures a number of dreams of mine and has inspired me to dream more. Please look up Doc's story and see yourself "fitting in" and "running strong." You are amazing people. It is good to be a part of you.

Note to fellow climbers: In high mountain adventure the term "short roping" refers to a an experienced mountaineeer and guide who attaches a weaker climber to his side with a short rope, essentially for the purposes of "carrying" the weaker climber to the top. I am blessed to be on each of your "short ropes." Thanks for the lift.

I was out on a solo ride the other night and a pack of riders blew me off the road. They were flying at awesome speeds, drafting the wind. Cyclists will use the pack to get a better workout while having fun at the same time. The pack that blew me away was 7 riders. Number 1 goes as hard as he can for as long as he can, blocking the wind for the rest of the pack. When he reaches threshold, he peels off and becomes number 7...and takes a break. 2 becomes 1, then peels off and becomes 7. They just keep going. Depending on several factors, number 7 may be riding at 50-70% effort....in a sense coasting. The pack only works if they ride close....very close. Sometimes wheels can get less than 2 inches apart. Got to stay close to block the wind. The rider in back almost gets pulled along with the rest of the group. Everyone takes turns pulling...and taking breaks. Risky staying close sometimes. The rewards are worth it if you want to get a good workout and have some fun. Shortropes, ironmans, alot of staying close in this group. A good workout and fun. I like the chat. Hope I pulled you along if only for 90 seconds.

You, my friend, have drafted me! In more ways than one: You have given me a lift -- and you have "drafted" me to be part of the team. Hmmmm. Did you know I am not much of a "biker?" Yet you invite me? That's a cool look. When you tell your child to reach out to new kids at school and help them to fit in...when you tell your kids to go up and greet the new kids on the soccer team...when you invite every kid in the class ot the birthdy party so no one feels left out, when does all that stop? When do we stop inviting...reaching out...drafting? Looks like you don't!! Thank you!! Caught in your draft and enjoying the ride! On the mountains...
